Foot and Mouth News
Despite conflicting and confusing advice in the media the countryside is still open for recreation and there is no reason why you should deny yourself the excitement and fun of experiencing Britain.
Our tours are only slightly impacted by the current foot and mouth outbreak, with walks in the hills being worst affected - however we have pulled in some new and equally exciting alternatives to ensure the thrill and adventure continues.

Of the areas we visit Snowdonia, the Lake District and Hadrian's Wall have suffered the most, and in these areas most of the hills are out-of-bounds for walking etc and look likely to remain so for the coming few weeks at least.
So this is how the earlier tours of Karibuni will be affected.
- New Forest - parts of the Forest and surrounding areas are starting to open up, and we are also able to enjoy the coast, beaches and sea at Bournemouth.
- Snowdonia - walking is limited but Forestry Commission land is now open for walking and cycling. Attractions such as the Slate Mines and Portmeirion are open as normal.
- Lake District - the wilderness camp will be unavailable, but fun can still be had on the water - all the cruises, boating, rowing and sailing is operating as normal.
- Hadrian's Wall - this is presently closed, and for the earlier tours we will be travelling across the Yorkshire Dales (Herriot country) and spending more time exploring York.
The situation does change regularly and so please contact us for the latest news and views.

And the winner is…
Thanks to all the entrants in the competition to win a FREE tour for you and a friend this summer. We had a great response, and can finally announce that the winner is…
Michele De Herdt from Antwerp.
We will be welcoming Michele and a friend on a 9-day adventure tour sometime through the summer. Well done to Michele, and better luck next time to the rest of you.

We always like to be offering a little something to encourage you to see and experience Britain - and now we are giving away a discount of £50 from any tour booked on the website before the end of May.

Simply visit our website and fill out the online Booking Enquiry form.
In the "Any Special Requirements" box please enter "Newsletter £50 discount". We will then contact you to arrange payment (minus the whopping £50) and confirm the booking - it's as simple as that!

So you can continue to enjoy the great value of only £33 per day throughout the summer. Great value considering that all transport, accommodation and meals are included. With Karibuni you don't need to add on costs of hostels, eating out etc.

Cheap car rentals in US
This must be the cheapest way to rent a car in the US - for only $15 a day or $75 a week you get a normal compact car, with unlimited mileage - the only condition is that you have to drive it from Florida to the North East in no more than 8 days.
Every year, after Easter and through most of May rental companies have to shift thousands of cars from Florida to New York, New Jersey and New England etc. So if you are able to pick one up from Florida and take it to one of 30 cities in the NE, you can benefit from these very cheap prices. They announce the schemes quite late, so the best bet is to phone the big companies around Easter and through May to see what's going.
And of course they have to get those cars back down to Florida in the Autumn (or Fall) so if you are heading out in October then also check out what's going.
Avis and Budget are 2 companies to look at.

Bison Trekking In Europe
A weekend destination with a novel site in Europe…bison!
They can be found in the Ardennes region of southern Belgium, near to the Luxembourg border. The Ardennes is a fantastic area with rolling forested and pine clad hills and pretty villages with turreted chateaux. We recommend a visit in Autumn when the fabulous colours are on show.
Look out for the good deals that come up on the Eurostar. You may want to stay a night in Brussels, which now has more Michelin starred restaurants than Paris, before getting the Belgian Rail train down to Bastogne - the main town in this region.
The best way to explore the region is on horse-back, and in the village of Neffe you can hire horses from about £6 per hour. Head out through the forests and valleys towards the village of Recogne to come across "La Ferme des Bisons" where herds of bison roam. The park recreates Indian life in mid-west America with the giant creatures as central characters, and also pays tribute to the many American Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of the Ardennes in WWII. The bison are farmed for their meat, and if you have not become too attached to the bison you can also taste a bison-burger before heading back in the saddle for more of the great countryside that the Ardennes has in abundance.

Active Snacks
Far better than normal chocolate bars, flapjacks are an ideal snack for when you're out and about - and particularly in active pursuits when you need some energy, but space and weight in your rucksack or pocket is limited. Not just fit for horses - oats are a fabulous source of starchy carbohydrates, fibre and B vitamins. When mixed with butter and sugar, the calories push up to around 400Cal for a 100g bar. But this typically provides a whopping 50-60% of carbohydrate and is a good source of lasting energy. And a small tip - the Marks and Spencer apricot flapjack is a great choice with plenty of fruit and oats keeping the fat content down and boosting the protein - making it an ideal active snack choice.

Quick Tip for Edinburgh Museums
If you happen to be in Edinburgh on a Tuesday, you can visit 2 great museums absolutely free, and take your time to explore their great collections. Free entry is from 4:30pm and they are open until 8pm - so it's ideal to then head out for the legendary nightlife.
The Museum of Scotland and the Royal Museum of Scotland are to be found on Chambers Street and are excellent, well-stocked museums with a current Ancient Egypt display.

Sharing a "final" African journey
Here's an extract from an email received from Simon travelling in Tanzania after a unique journey - the sort of experience that makes travel so different and exciting.

"Have just recovered from taking a lift with a minibus carrying a group of friends from Mombassa to Dar es Salaam to bury their late friend - he was also on the bus just behind the driver comfortably laid back in his final resting box. The bus was packed and most of Mr Ed's mates got close with him on his final journey - they sat on 'im.
And what a final journey! The dirt road still showed the dramatic signs of El Nino's devastation and it was not long before we went straight off it, landing at what is nautically referred to as capsize.
But with a team effort we got back onto the road and set off...funnily enough strange sounds coming from the under carriage so we stopped and someone was dispatched to find some rubber. He cut it up, stuck it underneath somewhere - I don't really think it mattered where - and we trotted off again with many "re-patching" stops before Dar.
All in all a hilarious and surreal journey and I am sure that Mr Ed would have been quite literally laughing in his grave to see the excitement and activity going on for his final journey - god rest his soul!
But was worth it as am now in Zanzibar and have never been to a place with two Zeds before!!"

Well, that's all for this time - I hope you enjoyed it and found the information useful.

If you have a story to tell or some travel news that you think we should share then please let us know. Send your thoughts and comments to info@karibuni.co.uk

We look forward to hearing from you,

Many thanks, and happy travels

Paul
