Le Grand Bornand
The village of Grand Bornand is the second largest village
in the Aravis Mountain ski resort after La Clusaz. A small town huddled at the
end of the valley, the traditional lifestyle continues to this day allowing
tourists to enjoy the weekly village markets, the local events and the friendly
local bars and restaurants as well as the fantastic skiing.
The main skiing area extends a long way from the village of Grand Bornand, over towards the Aravis Mountain chain and down towards the higher village of Chinaillon. The skiing area is approximately 100km, but linked with nearby La Clusaz the total skiing comes to over 220km – plenty to keep you busy for a ski weekend or short break!
The Skiing in Le Grand Bornand
There is a large range of ski runs for all abilities of skier, from beginner slopes through to some unbashed black pistes and plenty of cruisy blues and reds in between too. Grand Bornand is well known in the area for its celebrated freeride area – a large north-facing natural bowl between pistes – as well as for its snow park which is amongst the top 5 in France.
Although the village is quieter than La Clusaz, once the
slopes close for the day there are still several good bars where you can get a
beer or glass of wine, play pool and listen to some live music. There are also
some well-priced restaurants and brasseries in the village. In fact, as the
Aravis resort isn’t too well known to the Brits, all the prices are a lot more
reasonable than in many French resorts. We consider Grand Bornand, along with neighbouring
La Clusaz, to be an unfound gem – fantastic skiing, no lift queues (outside of
Feb holidays – but even these aren’t too bad) and decent on- and off-mountain
prices.
