The Villages
The
main town and resort of La Clusaz is supported by nearby Grand Bornand and
St Jean de Sixt to make up the 220km Aravis Ski Region. The area has long
been a popular destination for the French and Swiss who rate the skiing
highly and regularly visit at weekends. We are pleased to have discovered
their little secret, just an hour away from Geneva.
A decision to develop only traditional chalet style accommodation has preserved the look and feel of the area, so it has escaped the ugly resort developments of the 60's & 70's. Each village is based around the church, main square and the traditional "centre ville" and still retains a very appealing French atmosphere.
Our
lodge is located in Saint Jean de Sixt, a small village conveniently located
just 2km from either of the main resort centres of La Clusaz and Le Grand
Bornand. The resort ski bus (free with area lift pass) links all the areas,
but we also offer you slopes transfers in the morning and afternoon for
added convenience.
The village has a full range of shops (tabac, convenience, grocers, doctors, pharmacy) as well as a Post Office with ATM. La Clusaz and Grand Bornand have the full complement of banks, shops and services you would expect.
Many of our past visitors have loved the villages and their charm (as well as the great skiing) which are predominantly French in ambience and do not suffer from the excesses of mass British tourism. Traditional farmers' markets sit side-by-side with a modern ski village.
La
Clusaz and the surrounding valleys are home to the local cheese - Reblechon
- which features in the chalet menus. The local residents still welcome
visitors with vin-chaud and a torch light procession on Monday nights.
Mountain Restaurants
The mountain restaurants are well noted in the Aravis, with many welcoming places offering good quality Savoyard cuisine - as well as revitalising vin-chaud, coffee or hot chocolate. And what's more, they offer some great value - with full meals for under £7.50.
Lively Après-Ski
La
Clusaz is well served for bars and cafes in which to unwind and relax after
a day on the slopes with a beer in your hand as you watch the sun set pink
over the mountains. Many of them are 'ski to the door' to make your life
even easier.
For the evening there is a wide choice of bars and restaurants with a couple of favourites offering pool, music and a fancy dress party on Wednesdays! The clubs get going at 12am, but keep on until 5am for those with stamina!
The après-ski really picks up at the weekend as the French and Swiss arrive and there are several venues for late night fun including a nightclub with glass floors straddling a tumbling river!
