3 Peaks Challenge Weekend
The 3 Peaks Challenge incorporates the climbing of the 3
highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales – otherwise known as Scafell
Pike at 978 metres, Ben Nevis at 1,344 metres and Snowdon at 1,085 metres.
The key to the challenge is not just getting to the peak of each of these 3 mountains but doing so within 24 hours, to include travel time between them.
3 Peaks Weekend Packages
We used to run a lot of these trips – most weekends through summer in fact – but have now stopped for a variety of reasons, as follows.
We worry about the impact that the challenge has on the fragile environment as large numbers of people taking part in the challenge race up and down the mountains as fast as they can. Also we were seeing a few injuries from people pushing
themselves too hard, often in the dark. Finally, it was getting harder to enable our groups to complete within 24 hours as the traffic is getting so bad going in and out of Wales at the time we were hitting the main roads. Add to this the busy-ness of the little roads around the lakes and Snowdonia and we had had enough!
Consequently when we moved out to the French Alps we devised some walking challenges of our own for you to enjoy. These will hopefully give you a better, safer experience of mountain walking challenges, leave the mountains more intact due to smaller volumes of people using the tracks and allow you to get away from the crowds – surely what mountain and hill walking is all about in the first place?
We stumbled across this poem on the Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team's website which amused us and may help convince you to come and walk with us in the Alps where it really is just you, the mountains and the sky as far as you can see.
