Lake District Walking Weekends

Walking Weekends in the Lake DistrictThe stunning Lake District has been one of the most popular areas for walkers since it was designated as a National Park in 1951. Of course Cumbria, the county which contains the Lake District, has been well visited by tourists for many years before that. It became popular in the 1700’s when tourists such as Celia Fiennes, Thomas Gray and Daniel Defoe started to write about the wild beauty of the area in journals of their travels. This was compounded when one of the Lakes’ most famous authors, William Wordsworth, wrote his ‘Guide to the Lakes’ in 1810 before going on to write a lot of his best known poetry in Ullswater, Grasmere and Hawkshead. Coleridge and Southey were also very influential poets of the Lakes.

Walking Scafell Pike

As well as containing the deepest, longest lakes in England the Lakes also boast the highest mountain peak – Scafell Pike  - standing 978 metres high. The other three peaks of the Lake District just waiting to be scaled by walkers are Scafell, Helvellyn and Skiddaw.

Of course there is plenty of walking for hikers of all abilities – you don’t have to be bagging peaks on your time off! With emerald meadows, gentle lakeside tracks and stunning views from clearings in ancient woodlands to enjoy you don’t have to be hiking challenging ridgelines or scrambling to get the most out of your walking weekend in the Lake District.

Lake District Walking Weekend Packages

Lake District Walking WeekendsMuch as we love walking in the Lake District and have enjoyed many years’ hiking there with groups we are now based in the French Alps – different but just as beautiful – where we run group walking weekends. Consequently we don’t offer our Lake District holidays anymore.

Visit our French walking weekend website at www.walkweekender.com to see how we can help you group enjoythe French Alps.

Alternatively we still know lots of people in Cumbria so if it’s the Lakes you’re after we recommend walking or staying with one of our partners. We know they’ll show you the best the Lake District walking weekends have to offer.
