Lake District Adventure Weekend 2007
A 3-day weekend of adventure and activity in the Lake District - with
the chance to canoe, learn to sail or windsurf and climb. Also explore
the lakes by boat and enjoy a great walk in the fells.
Due
to an expanded programme of French
Adventure Weekends this weekend trip is now only available as a
Lake
District Self-guide.
THE ITINERARY
You make your way to the beautiful Lake District. On arrival in the Lakes,
first stop is the waterside at Bowness and Windermere to grab some lunch
and wander round this popular town. After lunch you can catch a traditional
Lakeland Steamer boat on Lake Windermere. Then it's on to your friendly
hostel accommodation to settle in and refresh. In town there are many
choices for dinner, after which you can sample the local hospitality in
Ambleside and some great pubs.
After
breakfast on Saturday it's time to head north to the town of Keswick
and the beauty of Derwent Water
and what better way to enjoy the
Lakes than from the middle of one. A 2-hour session in Canadian canoes
gives you plenty of time to explore the rocky coastline and views from
the lake. Haul your canoe out on one of the islands to rest and enjoy
the peace and quiet of the fabulous scenery. From the great views out
in the middle, you can see why Derwent Water
is regarded as one of the most scenic lakes.
Next comes
a chance to explore the town of Keswick and wander in the historic town
centre - maybe checking out the excellent range of outdoor equipment
shops for any bargains - and finding some lunch. For the rest of the
afternoon we stay on land and enjoy an introductory session on the indoor
climbing wall. All tuition is included, so once you've mastered the
ropes and climbing technique you can continue to climb for as long as
you like, trying some of the more challenging climbs in this large venue.
It's a busy day, but there is still time for a walk to the 4,000 year
old Castlerigg Stone Circle. This 100ft diameter ancient monument has
a great setting in between 2 large mountain ridges. We can arrange a
dinner in the friendly local hotel bar which serves some great food
including the local speciality of Cumberland sausage.
We have
a leisurely start on Sunday morning - and after breakfast we suggest
you head into the fells for a great walk so don't forget your walking
boots or some sturdy shoes/trainers. Varied terrain of open hills and
woodland and some great views from a peak give us an interesting walk
for a couple of hours. The walking is so good in the Lakes that we are
spoilt for choice, but will choose a mixed route for the group. We drop
into Ambleside and can check out the pretty Stockghyll Falls as well
as wander round the town to find lunch, after which we head home.
